Dua and Dhikr

When struck by tragedy.

  1.

إِنّا للهِ وَإِنَا إِلَـيْهِ رَاجِِعُـونَ ، اللهُـمِّ اْجُـرْني فِي مُصِـيبَتي، وَاخْلُـفْ لِي خَيْـراً مِنْـها

Innaa lillaahi wa 'innaa 'ilayhi raaji'oon, Allaahumma'-jurni fee museebatee wa 'akhliflee khayran minhaa

(We are from Allah and unto Him we return. O Allah take me out of my plight and bring to me after it something better.)

Umm Salama, the wife of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

If any servant (of Allah) who suffers a calamity says:" We belong to Allah and to Him shall we return; O Allah, reward me for my affliction and give me something better than it in exchange for it," ' Allah will give him reward for affliction, and would give him something better than it in exchange. She (Umm Salama) said: When Abu Salama died. I uttered (these very words) as I was commanded (to do) by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). So Allah gave me better in exchange than him. i. e. (I was taken as the wife of) the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).

(Sahih Muslim 918b)

2.

حَسْبُـنا اللهُ وَنِعْـمَ الوَكـيل

Hasbunallaahu wa ni'amal-wakeel

(Allah is sufficient for us and the best of those on whom to depend.)

(Surah Al-Imran 3:173)

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

'Allah is Sufficient for us and He Is the Best Disposer of affairs," was said by Abraham when he was thrown into the fire; and it was said by Muhammad when they (i.e. hypocrites) said, "A great army is gathering against you, therefore, fear them," but it only increased their faith and they said: "Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs, for us)." (3.173)

(Sahih al-Bukhari 4563)

Narrated Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri:

that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "How can I be comfortable when the one with the horn is holding it in his lips and his forehead is leaning forward, waiting to be given permission to blow?" The Muslims said: "So what should we say, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Say: 'Allah is sufficient for us and what a good protector He is. We rely upon [our Lord] Allah'" - and perhaps Sufyan (one of the narrators) said: "upon Allah we rely."

(Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3243)
